Understanding DTH Services
These days DTH has reached almost every home in the country, especially since the announcement by TRAI making DTH mandatory. From installing a digital TV box to putting up the dishes at individual homes, there is a lot that is involved in availing DTH services in India. Despite all this, there are still several people who remain unaware of what DTH exactly is.
What is DTH?
Basically, DTH stands for Direct-To-Home television and can be defined as the reception of different satellite programmes via personal dishes that are installed at individual homes. When you opt for DTH, there is no need for a local cable operator and the consumer/customer is in direct contact with their chosen broadcaster.
How does the DTH service work?
Before getting into the working of a DTH network, one needs to be aware of the components that make a DTH network, which are:
· Broadcasting centre
· Satellites
· Encoders
· Multiplexers
· Modulators
· DTH receivers
In the initial stage, a DTH provider leases Ku-band transponders from a satellite. After this, an encoder is used to convert the data signals, videos, and audios into their digital format, after which a multiplexer mixes the signal.
The end user is provided with a small dish antenna as well as a digital TV set top box that work together to decode and view these channels. So, in short, DTH services can be referred to as an encrypted transmission that is sent directly to the end user, received via the user’s dish antenna, and finally decoded by the digital TV set top box.
What makes DTH different from cable TV?
The main difference between DTH and cable TV is in the way they reach the consumers. As mentioned, in DTH, the channels are transmitted from a satellite to the small dish antenna. So, a broadcaster is connected directly to the user and there is no involvement of middlemen.
As there are no middlemen, or even wires or cables that go from a cable operator to the home, DTH has the capability of reaching the remotest of areas. And of course, a DTH user can also access almost 700 channels.
DTH services have truly revolutionised the way everyone watches TV!
